She meets Emmeline Pethick

And then I met Emmeline Pethick. I was threatened with tuberculosis, owing to the constant breathing of bad air in an ill-ventilated Club room underground, too long hours and, as I now know, an absence of any stimulating friendship, intellectual or spiritual. I had been ordered out of London by a doctor with a pretty certain opinion that I should never return, and just before leaving I heard from an old friend of the family that Emmeline Pethick was coming to work with us.
